Huge Military Slaughter — But First A “Shout Out” to Obama’s Bud

2009 November 5

Editor’s Note: Read David Forsmark’s NewsReal commentary on Keith Olbermann and MSNBC’s pathetic attempt at covering this story here.

Shortly after police say Major Malik Nadal Hasan opened fire at the largest active duty armored post in the United States, Ft. Hood in Texas, President Barack Obama held a press conference to address the issue. Before getting around to the shooting that had already claimed a dozen lives and wounded at least 31 people, he began his remarks by saying:

I want to thank my Cabinet members and senior administration officials who participated today. I hear that Dr. Joe Medicine Crow (ph) was around, and so I want to give a shout out to that Congressional Medal of Honor winner. It’s good to see you.

The quotation says it all: our commander-in-chief feels there is no event so serious that it cannot be prefaced by a moment of glib hipness, no solemn loss so sacred he will deny himself a moment of wry self-indulgence. Soldiers were killed? Let’s say hi to Joe first. An entire theater of war needs a plan to defeat the terrorists who struck America on 9/11? No reason I can’t go golfing, shoot some hoops, and hit the town with Michelle.

President Bush used to break into tears when addressing soldiers and was reviled as a stone-hearted warmonger; Donald Rumsfeld was demonized for using a machine to sign notification letters to fallen soldiers’s next-of-kin. President Obama gives out rounds of virtual fist-bumps to his buds before even mentioning a slaughter of American soldiers, perpetrated by Americans, in mid-America.

We desperately need an adult in the White House. Sadly, today’s press conference proves we do not have one.

(Incidentally, the shooter — who killed 12 people with two handguns — is reportedly an adherent of the Religion of Peace incensed about being sent to war.)

As for the “shout out”: if the man doesn’t even understand he shouldn’t use such phrases at a moment when there’s a terrorist attack, well, he’s pretty clueless, isn’t he?

Normally, I’d be among the first to agree. But, should they in fact do so, it would be a ludicrous example. Unless, of course, they want to argue that the military should be disarmed as well as civilians. Come to think of it, a lot of them want exactly that.

So Bush can finish reading a children’s book on 9/11, but Obama can’t gather his thoughts in the middle of a speaking event? I’m no fan of Obama, but how about some consistency people…

    • 2009 November 5

Bush was halfway into a book and did not want to jar a roomful of children. Obama apparently wrote out a statement and chose to preface slaughter with a “shout out” that cheapened both the shooting and the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Obama was no in the “middle” of anything. He already new about Fort Hood, which had happened hours earlier and the press and cameras were assembled and waiting for him to address the situation. He happened to be at the Department of the Interior for this event. All he had to do was reverse his remarks by starting off with: “As many of you may have heard, there has been a tragedy at Fort Hood….” After he finished, he could have, in somber tones, that sincew thewre is no new news, he’ll briefly rap up his conferfence remarks and get back to the White House to await developments. In other words, just flip-flop his sequence of remarks. Thos ewho voted for this man did so because what he lacked in experience, he made up for in judgement. I didn’t see any of that today.

Obama had a great deal of time to prepare a statement yesterday when this happened. I know I shouldn’t be surprised but as I watched this, I began to wonder…..just what the heck was he doing. The way his “speech” began you would never have known this tragedy had taken place. Just days after the “photo op” at Dover you would have thought with all that sincerity that oozes from this man, the military personnel and their families would have taken priority over everything else. Unbelievable!

I know it’s a long document(4 pages), but somebody should give Obama the Constitution and hightlight the fact that he is Commander in Cheif of the Military. His leadership of the military is one of his top priorities. Underlings were killed by a SR officer in his army…he should have shown leadership. Should have promised justce for those killed. Instead, like the Man-Child he is, he “Shouts out” to his political croonies…….

His responsibility is to be a brave leader and a mature leader….he is part of the military… this was a treasonous act and he calls it violence(need to modify Artile 2-right) Heaven forbid he is not politically correct and shows emotions against a tradior, a coward…..instead he withhold judgement, not to offend out Muslim brothers.

He had plenty of time to prepare remarks….he wasn’t interuppted- like Bush was….he had time to prepare remarks…He chose to SHOUT out………….that was more important than vowing justice for his direct reports that were murdered and maimed by one of his managers

On 9/11 all that ANYONE knew for quite a while was that an airliner had apparently crashed into one of the WTC towers. President Bush was informed about it and (if I remember correctly) asked to be kept informed on the incident, but it was certainly not – at that moment – a reason to cancel everything and race back to the White House. I don’t recall it being a duty of the President to immediately hold a press conference every time a plane crashes. After the second plane hit the other tower and it became obvious that this was not an accident President Bush was much more appropriately involved.

In the Ft. Hood incident it was obvious from the outset that a horrific crime had been committed on an Army base, apparently by an Army officer, and Obama waits 2 1/2 hours, organizes a press conference and comes out practically cracking jokes before he even mentions the shooting. What next – is he going to rap about it?

This man is a fool – an inept fool – and his complete and total misunderstanding of his responsibilities as Commander In Chief was on full public display yesterday. God save us all from this fraud.

So he says hi to a decorated soldier who is present first before getting down to business? And that’s inappropriate?

Why is this even a blog post? Oh that’s right, you’re obsessed with finding any reason to smear Obama that you’ll dig up an imagined offense to soldiers in a passing, polite greeting to someone.

How about commenting on the substantive of what Obama said, instead of this cheap, hastily posted ‘twitter’ that says more about your inner problems than it says anything about how Obama feels about soldiers.

He is the President of this Country, but didn’t care enough to even get an update before speaking, but he certainly knew who was in the audience and could toss out a little slang. First, a person is a “recipient” of the Congressional Medal of Honor, not a “winner”. It’s not the Oscars.

Not far off the mark. After all, I watched the far-left loon bags in Santa Fe, NM party-down in celebration of their great “Gotcha!” moment–complete with jugglers in costume–while their fellow Americans were dead and dying in New Orleans after Katrina. Didn’t matter they could have used their weekly protest date to take up collections of food, water, and money to help those desperately in need. Nope. Much more appropriate to dance on the street corners and high-five each other over the Bush admins’ failure (no signs condeming Nagin, Blanco, et al–who shared responsibility in the debacle). He told his listeners – leaders from many of the 564 federally recognized American Indian tribes – that he had discarded his prepared comments in light of the breaking news.

He chose to acknowledge a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient present at the conference. Is it so appalling to acknowledge a person who has received the the highest award that can be given to military personnel prior to shifting the planned speech to Tribal leaders into the statement regarding the tragedy at a military base?

When did giving a “shout out” become a moment of “glib happiness”?

Perhaps if you clicked through to the press release and read the context of the speech Obama was giving, you’d have noticed he was beginning his introductory remarks at the Tribal Nations Conference, not a press conference about the shootings in Texas.

Obviously, his scheduled speech has nothing to do with the shootings in Texas and it would make no sense for him to open up his speech speaking directly about those events. He segued into them after making a few short comments, including a nod to Dr. Joseph Medicine Crow, an important figure among the Native American community for which the conference was being held, and completely apropos to Obama’s speech.

He spent the remainder of his time bypassing his intended remarks in order to comment on the tragic events in Texas. Read the original press release. You’ve misrepresented the situation and added your own racist propaganda to take Obama’s quote out of context.

The surroundings of his remarks are meaningless. There has just been an unresolved national tragedy, which overrides any local conference or gathering. There are times the president represents the entire nation and must address the nation in that capacity: times of tragedy, natural disaster, or foreign attack.

Reagan did so after the Challenger.
Bush stood at Ground Zero after 9/11.

Today, Obama’s charge was to speak in this capacity, and he blew it.

He was addressing an audience of Native American tribal leaders. That was the purpose for his speech. You right-wingers will politicize anything.

[President Bush used to break into tears when addressing soldiers and was reviled as a stone-hearted warmonger; ]

Oh, gee… as long as his eyes watered. (I don’t recall him ever breaking into tears.) Yes, he lied us into an unnecessary war where thousands of Americans died, sent our troops into battle without the armor necessary, allowed untold amounts of war profiteering… But yes, as long as he got emotional, that’s all that matters.

Only problem here is that the guy didn’t get the Congressional Medal of Honor, he got the Medal of Freedom, BIG difference. Obama should know the Congressional Medal of Honor is given ONLY to US service members, not civilians.

The Medal of Honor is the highest award for valor in action against an enemy force which can be bestowed upon an individual serving in the Armed Services of the United States. Generally presented to its recipient by the President of the United States of America in the name of Congress, it is often called the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Well said, to the commenters I have quoted above. This is one of the many reasons I no longer watch the news and am seriously rethinking my time spent reading about it.

I didn’t like Mr. Bush all that much. I’m not all that crazy about Mr. Obama. But I really am not going to use my remaining time on this planet to pass judgement on their overall performance, using criteria such as the slang one used, or how long another read a book to children while processing devastating information. Did we really want Mr. Bush to run from the room leaving stunned children behind? Does it really, in the long view scheme of things, matter if Mr. Obama said hello in a casual manner to a Medal of Honor soldier before focusing on the real news at hand?

Having the statements about the attack in Texas first, and then trying to pass a greeting to that soldier above the noise while everyone scraped their chairs and stood up and talked to each other because the “main topic” was over – THAT would have satisfied your criteria for Mr. Obama’s adulthood? Joe was at the White House today for a “tribal leaders conference” and President Obama made comments at the end of the conference in regards to that event and then, IN LIGHT OF THE TRAGEDY IN TEXAS, switched gears to address it. There never was a press conference. He interrupted this event to address it. Just like W interrupted his elementary book reading on 9/11. It was worse hearing it in person. I was listening to news radio and the news conference that the White House said was going to address the Fort Hood tragedy was to begin at 5pm. I was actually looking forward to hearing some heartfelt words, although I knew he would be reading from a teleprompter. It was going to be reassuring to hear him anyway, politcs aside, this is a situation in which you want to hear your president speak soarinngly. A big HOWEVER, though. When the radio station began to broadcast what the White House announced was the president’s response to the shooting, it became apparant that either they screwed up, the radio station screwed up or someone screwed up. He was fippant, laughing and did not even speak about the tragedy for the first 5 minutes. It was so appalling. He couldn’t have thanked the tribal assembly before going live to address the shooting? It was so bad and embarassing that the radio station cut away until he was done babbling about Dr. Joe Medicine and shout outs. His actual words about the tragedy were good. But the incredibly insensitve gaff of ending his tribal conference before speaking about dead US soldiers on an American base is just another piece of evidence that this man has no clue, pretty much about everything he was elected to do. I try so hard to give this man the benefit of the doubt in his presidency. No one is perfect. Certainly not candidates who claim to be THE ONES WE’VE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR on the campaign trail. I’m sorry, I didn’t hear the White House making the shootings into a political point. President Obama didn’t blame conservatives for the deaths and wounds of 43 people. I heard the president say something that was poorly timed and worded. I’m used to that happening, as I’ve watched EVERY president put his foot in his mouth for nearly forty years. I was merely commenting on making this senseless act of murder a matter of political expediency. This blog did that.

One poster suggested that the president should have offered a moment of silence before his speech. I agree. And that, my friend, is what I was advocating for in my previous post: silence and conduct worthy of being an example. If all you have to offer is name-calling, hand-wringing and fear no one is the better.

I believe that appealing to politics on any side as a means of our nation’s preservation and security violates the over-arching constitutional tone of personal rights and responsibilities. Whether we like a president or not shouldn’t change our decency and civility. But unfortunately it did in the last administration and it continues, I think in a louder voice, during this administration.

Now if you’ll forward me President Obama’s email address, I will write him a brief note expressing the fact that I wish he would have offered the nation a moment of silence, so that you will stop calling me a hypocrite, you big meanie.

    POOR DR HASAN

THIS WAR IS SICKENING OUR KIDS, IT EVEN SICKEN A PSYCHIATRIST, RICHMOND HIGH RAPES, AMERICAN SOLDIERS IN IRAQ RAPED AND KILLED A 13 YEAR GIRL AND HER ENTIRE FAMILY…..

    ALL THE CHILDREN ARE INSAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANE…..

    This is the end
    Beautiful friend
    This is the end
    My only friend, the end
Of our elaborate plans, the end
Of everything that stands, the end
No safety or surprise, the end
I’ll never look into your eyes…again
Can you picture what will be
    So limitless and free
    Desperately in need…of some…stranger’s hand
    In a…desperate land
Lost in a Roman…wilderness of pain
And all the children are insane
    All the children are insane
Waiting for the summer rain, yeah
There’s danger on the edge of town
    Ride the King’s highway, baby

Obamma is such a G.D. sham! He is a disgrace to the office of the President of the USA. HE, like nearly all elected officials, does not care about citizens of the USA. Flush ‘em all down the terlet.

Now had G. W. B. said this kind of remark after an event like this…hoo boy, you bet every democrat along the beltway would be up in arms! This double-standard that is clearly alive and well is very very disturbing. I also blame the mass media for this and all the liberal democrats out there that gradually & systematical strip us of our core freedoms and beliefs.

O can do no wrong ever. What a crock.

    Travesty.

Does it ever occur to his speech writers that no one ‘wins’ a Congressional Medal of Honor — it is a symbol, and a recognition of personal sacrifice in an instance of grave danger.

How about recognizing that patriot whose devotion to his fellow man and self-sacrifice has earned him the recognition of the Congressional Medal of Honor, and the gratitude of our Nation….

I’m sure someone can improve on this…but you get my drift?

This shooting sounds to me like an Islam “sleeper” and was orchestrated by the liberals . . . Obama . . . to create a crisis before the signing of the health care bill! Oh, I’m sorry! Does that sound cynical and cold-hearted? I see the evil behind every incident that has happened since the Nov 2008 election and have watched the reaction of our president, the Congress and the American people. Whatever unpopular action this administration wants to accomplish is covered by a well-orchestrated crisis! I pray that we are NOTdistracted but will keep focused on the diabolical purpose of those who want to perpetrate our demise!

Obama is a radical leftie. He’s friends with a guy that tried to bomb the Pentagon and kill soldiers.

he could care less our our troops. He despises them anyway, unless used for a photo-op… especially when dead.

    >>I hear that Dr. Joe Medicine Crow (ph) was around, and so I want to give a shout out to that Congressional Medal of Honor winner.

Apparently, Obama awarded Mr. Crow his medal back in September. Actually hung it around his neck. The thing is… it wasn’t a Medal of Honor. It was a Medal of Freedom. The MOH is for military, the MOF is for civilians.

You would’ve thought Obama would have known that.

I’m also reminded of Obama’s reaction to the Gates brouhaha of a few months ago. “One shouldn’t jump to conclusions, but it would seem the police acted stupidly.” Now when it comes to an army officer killing his own, it’s ‘We mustn’t jump to conclusions until all the facts are in.” and that was it. One wonders if he learned from the Gates mistake, or if he just didn’t want to add that extra speculation because it would have been about a Muslim.

The President does not respect or understand warriors. Joe Medicine Crow served this country with honor and distinction during WWII. Although I think he deserves it, he is not a medal of honor winner. He was awarded the Congressional Medal of Freedom, a civillian award. I wish the Clueless One would sit down with some warriors like Crow (and maybe even McCrystal) and try to understand and appreciate the sacrifices they make for Freedom and Democracy .

The troops at Fort Hood, Texas, faced the enemy, prior to deployment, and he was in the ranks. However, to read the current news papers, or listen to the funny media, you have to read the majority ot the article prior to learning the identity of the killer.
The killer was Major Malik Nadal Hasan, a Muslim. A Muslim who is reportedly to have been removed from Walter Reed Hospital for attempting to convert his patients to Islam. Major Hasan the follower of Islam compared the acts of suicide bombers to that of American soldier who throws himself on a grenade to save fellow troops. This is the perverted thinking of this ideology, when you compare the former who takes innocent lives to the latter, who makes the extreme sacrifice to save his fellow man.
Islam is a never ending war against the civilized world and nothing in it’s fourteen hundred year history deviates from that purpose.

“…Dr. Joe Medicine Crow (ph) was around, and so I want to give a shout out to that Congressional Medal of Honor winner.”

If I have my facts straight, Dr. Joe Medicine Crow never served on active duty for any branch of the U.S. military. This means that no action he was ever involved in would make him eligible for the MOH. I am told he was conferred with the Medal of Freedom, the highest CIVILIAN award available.

By the way, you do not WIN the MOH, you EARN it.

“Joseph Medicine Crow joined the army, becoming a scout in the 103rd Infantry Division. Whenever he went into battle, he wore his war paint beneath his uniform and a sacred eagle feather beneath his helmet.[1] Medicine Crow completed all four tasks required to become a war chief.”
